Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scam

Whatever you think about AI, it’s a scam.  Investors are pouring money into AI.  They’ve invested so much money that money for entrepreneurial projects is very difficult to obtain.

AI will be costly to the environment, quality of life, competence and the economy.

Here’s why.

Artificial Intelligence.  A definition of artificial from Webster’s Online Dictionary.

  1. made by human work or art, not by nature; not natural
  2. made in imitation of or as a substitute for something natural; simulated [artificial teeth]
  3. unnatural in an affected way

The definition of artificial in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language adds Affected or Insincere.

Certainly, we think we understand that these huge, resource-sucking data centers will give us the ability to have machines think like us, like a human.  Let’s look at that.

The adult human brain weighs about 3 lbs.(1350 grams), 75% of which is water–.  Consequently, the actual tissue that does the thinking weighs about 0.75 lbs. (338 grams).

I used AI to search for the size of a data center and the resources it uses.  Here is the disclaimer. “AI can make mistakes, so double-check responses”

A large AI center can use 1-3 million gallons of water per day, described as a city of 10-30,000 residents.  This is the data center size projected for Ft. Meade, Florida.

A hyperscale AI facility uses energy equivalent to 80,000 households per day.  A large AI facility uses energy equivalent to 800,000 households  per day.  Seems these facilities might need a small nuclear plant.

In any case, residents complain that a data center uses all their water and energy needs and expects them to pay for both.

A local example is Ft. Meade in the center of Florida.  The bucolic and beautiful Peace River runs through the town.  It’s rural with about 8.2 square miles and 5,500 residents.  The City Commissioners unanimously approved a data center over the vociferous protests of the residents.

The protests were for good reasons.  No one can tell anyone who owns the center because this might affect the price of the stock.  What a lie.  The estimated water use is a bold-faced lie.  The monies projected to come to the town look like a payoff.  The bum’s rush, a sales tactic that says buy now or you might never get to buy, was used by the developer.

These tactics are standard stuff.

Some specifics.  This Stonebridge-developed (Not the owner, the owner has been kept secret) facility will be eight buildings of 4.4 million square feet total on 1300 acres.  This is a hyperscale facility with an estimated energy use of 1.2 million gigawatts per day or twice the energy used by Tallahassee per day.  Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, population 205,089).

The company says they will use a closed cooling system (these come with environmental concerns) of 50,000 gallons of potable water per day. Another estimate is 5 million gallons of water per day.

The Ft. Meade city commissioners approved the project on April 14, 2026.  The project’s operational date is sometime in 2028.

The Polk County Commission gave the developer a 10-yr break on property taxes worth $150 million.  The developer must create 50 full-time jobs each with an annual salary of at least $107,000.  The developer promises 450 high-paying jobs with a salary of $107,000 to the City of Ft. Meade.  The developer estimates 1500 spinoff jobs.

Annual tax revenue is estimated at $16 million with 13.2 million going to the Polk County School Board.  Then there is the new fire station for Ft. Meade and improvement of water systems to supply the data center.

Whoops!

I almost forgot the $300,000 for Ft. Meade to acquire new water rights and the separate monies for library improvements.  Well, well.  The translation:  Ft. Meade does not have enough water, and the library is an outright bribe.  The developer thinks citizens are stupid.

The Republican Florida legislature got into the act with HB 1517: Florida Data Center Transparency Act.  This got killed in committee.  However, SB484/HB1007 did make it, and Governor DeSantis signed this bill, Thursday May 7, 2026.  Search Florida SB 484: Data Centers.  This bill appears to be sponsored by the “Forty Thieves”  of Alibaba and the Forty Thieves fame.  The bill seems to the advantage of residents until you get into the specifics.  SB 484 essentially provides for study and delay by government agencies.  Residents have no real voice, no actual influence.

This bill was supported and signed by Governor DeSantis, the same governor who tried developing a Florida State Park into a golf course.  Oh really?  Go figure.  Facts are tough.

There’s a twist.

Governor DeSantis and Lieutenant Governor Collins(Now running for governor) were scheduled to have this ceremony at the Ft. Meade Community Center, but the Ft. Meade City Commissioners blocked their access to the center.  I wonder why?

The Governor signed SB 484 at the Cleveland Heights Golf Club in Lakeland.  The Lieutenant Governor  attended and had a press conference.

This article began with a comparison of the weight(size) of the human brain,  the function of which AI is attempting to replicate.  A large AI facility may cover eight, that’s eight, square miles and does not replicate the abilities of the human brain.

AI is a huge search engine.  Bad, criminal, wrong information leads to bad, criminal, wrong decisions.  Use your imagination for gosh sakes.

Is there anything about AI that is not wrong in the first place or has the potential to go wrong in the future?
